The Solo Stove Lite is the smallest of the Solo Stove range. Weighing in at just 255g this is one of our lightest, most compact, high-efficiency wood fuelled backpacking stoves. It’s about the size of a large mug, yet it’s powerful and has excellent heat-shielding to protect the ground.
This is a copy of the Bushbuddy Stove, which is hand-crafted in Alaska and is 30% lighter.
You can lift the pot support off and invert it to nest it inside the stove to save space for packing.
How does the Solo Stove work?
You light a small fire inside the stove on the wire grate, using some lighting paper or tinder. Gradually work up towards pine cones and twigs about the diameter of your fingers. With some practice you can get this camping stove hot within a minute or two, without producing any smoke. You’re then ready to cook; keep feeding it with fuel to control the heat output. Softwood burns fast and furious; harder woods burn longer.
What is ‘woodgas’?
The Solo Stove is a ‘woodgas stove’, the same as our trusty Wild Woodgas Stove. Woodgas refers to the smokey gases emitted when wood is heated, which contain much of the energy in wood. Most fires and stoves don’t burn the smoke very effectively, but woodgas stoves use containment and a pre-heated air supply to burn it very efficiently and intensely. Hence, the stove produces less smoke, less wood and more heat!
A small wood fire is lit in the combustion chamber of the stove and primary air is drawn in under the fire through the nickel grate. The combustion chamber is enclosed by two layers of high grade stainless steel. The inner wall of the chamber quickly heats up, warming the air between the layers, which in turn rises and pushes towards the secondary air holes at the top of the chamber. Therefore, hot air is pushed into the fire through the top holes, burning up any ‘woodgas’ to give an intense, focused ring of flames under your pot.
It’s simple, effective and pleasing all in one.
What does Wild Stoves make of the stove?
We think the stove is excellent. It’s compact, effective and well made. If you’ve been following us from our beginnings in 2010, you may remember we used to stock the famous Bushbuddy Stove – a seminal compact woodgas stove hand-made in America. The Solo Stove is modelled on that.
Solo Stove Pot
This stove works particularly well with the Stainless Steel Solo 900ml Pot. We find this is the perfect size to fit on top of the stove, and the stove packs down and nests inside it. Both come with drawstring bags.
What’s in the box?
The box contains a Solo Stove in a fitted drawstring bag, with comprehensive instructions.
