Primitive cooking stoves more deadly than Malaria

Oct 13, 2011 – WASHINGTON

Primitive cooking stoves are used throughout half the world and kill more people per year — about two million — than malaria, said a study published in the United States on Thursday.

Three billion people worldwide cook indoors by burning solid fuels such as wood, charcoal orfoundation_logo_square dung, yet little public awareness surrounds what the World Health Organization describes as the globe’s top environmental killer.

The smoke that pours from these unvented fires fills indoor spaces and causes pneumonia and chronic lung disease that particularly affects women and children who tend to spend more time in the home while men are outside working.

“Many people in developed countries don’t realize that smoke from indoor cooking fires is a terrible scourge upon the health of a large number of people,” said co-author Francis Collins, director of the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

Julia Roberts backs clean cookstoves

minaThe recently-formed Global Alliance for clean cookstoves is bringing governments, NGOs and researchers together with the aim of introducing 100 million clean cooking stoves into kitchens in low-income countries by 2020.

An impressive target, and one now supprted by the likes of Hilary Clinton and Julie Roberts (read more here). This high-level support of this 40 year old sector marks a gearing up in this sector.

Cooking with gas from wood

Wood gas stoves (or 'gasifiers') often amaze onlookers with their silent clean burn, and invariably generate interesting (and sometimes heated) discussions.Extremely cook vortex in the Lightweight Wood Gas Stove

Wood-gas stoves create conditions where primary air partially combusts wood gas, with the resulting gases then mixed with heated air above the fuel where they burn very cleanly. Gasifier stoves can be used to produce biochar - a rebranding of the age-old concept of returning the charcoal produced through combustion to the soil as a conditioner - and carbon sink.

Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves

1.9 million people (mostly women and children) die annually in the developing world from illnesses brought on by breathing toxic smoke from indoor cooking stoves.

Last month, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced the launch of the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves.
